I was so thrilled to be a part of the Adipositivity project this past mother’s day weekend. I chose to carry a bag to the shoot that belonged to my mother for bravery and inspiration. In 2009, while looking through her closet I claimed the bag as “just my style!” but she wouldn’t let me at it under the premise that she wanted to keep it around for her return to a hippy-earth-mother wise-woman role when she finally retired from her life-long career in education. At the time, I was unhappy with my body and unaware of the supportive communities and critical truths I have since found in the Fat Acceptance movement. When my beautiful mother passed away 5 years ago this May Day from complications of gastric-bypass surgery my world was irrevocably shattered, and also forever broadened. Of all the things she must have heard about her weight in her life, I don’t believe she ever heard someone say it’s ok to live, and be happy, and be beautiful in the body you have now. Adipositivity is helping me live that truth for her.
